It's the first day of December. This is when the festive season starts for me. Okay, I admit that the shops have been full of Christmas gifts, cards and decorations since October but I've done my best to avoid them (blinkers on, fingers in ears, lalalalalalalala). Today, I can finally welcome the arrival of the Christmas season. When I was a child, whatever else happened on the day, one thing I could always rely on was that The Wizard of Oz would be shown on TV at Christmas. With it's vivid colours, memorable songs and wonderful characters, it provided a magical journey to escape to for a while. I'm sure it gave my parents a break too. I was an only child after all. I didn't have any siblings to amuse me. While I travelled with Dorothy and Toto, my mum could have a rest after cooking Christmas lunch and my father would barricade himself behind whatever book he'd received that day. I would sit on the floor in front of the television, probably much too close ...
